5 Ways Brides Can Save!

1. 300+ guests are so year 2000!

No, but really cutting down on your guest list can save you hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars. Besides there’s nothing more romantic than an intimate setting with the people closest to you.

2. Shop the department stores.

You’ll be surprised to find MANY bridesmaids dresses for under $100 at stores like Macy’s, Dillard’s, and Nordstroms. J.Crew even has reasonably priced gowns and bridesmaids dresses. Long gone are the days of having to shop at a bridesmaids’ dress shop. Besides, your girls will appreciate the ability to wear their dress over and over again.

3. Buy bulk invitations, and customize them yourself.

When purchasing invitations, Christopher and I found beautiful ones on sale for $0.75 a piece! Sure it takes a little bit more time, but just think! You’ll be able to put the money you’ve saved into you dream dress. (OR! More wine and dessert!) Check out Michaels.com for some of our favorites.

4. Ask for airline miles and hotel points instead of gifts.

You’d be surprised just how many people are willing to give away the points they never use. This will help cut down on your honeymoon cost tremendously and will save you time with having to “register” at every store.

5. Skip the Blooms.

In the end, flowers make up a HUGE part of a wedding budget. Have your bridesmaids carry a fancy clutch purse instead. Some costume yet classy clutches can be found at Forever 21 and H&M and won’t break the budget. Have the flower girl hold a sparkler or a few balloons. She’ll keep her darling appeal and will like the entertainment value. Plus, you’ll save money.

Real Bride of the Week: Chelcy!

Hey lovely Brides-to-Be. DGM is starting a new feature called Real Brides to bring you the most up-to-date fashion, receptions, and details of real weddings.  Know someone who might be interested? Have them
email me their story with a few photos and we’ll add them to our list!

Lets meet the beautiful Chelcy! She married her high school sweetheart, Ben, in June 2010 at a beautiful ceremony site overlooking a lake in Texas. Chelcy’s wedding had small-town charm with big city vintage glam. What a great combination!

The bouquet arrangement is stunning! I’ve never seen one like this before and it compliments the lace on her dress. Also, props on the birdcage veil. Those are so hard to pull off and Chelcy looks beautiful!

What a fresh color for the bridesmaids, right? It makes the girls look beautiful while keeping Chelcy the center of attention. Their flowers add that bit of charm I was talking about earlier.

The men opted for a cream color suit rather than a traditional black tuxedo. I love that they match the sunset.

Can’t get enough of these chair decorations!

A sand ceremony is perfect for this outdoor, lake setting.

The perfect size train on her dress too, don’t you think?

oooooh! Beautiful, stunning centerpieces!

Love the pearls around the tealights!

The gift table. I’m not sure why I didn’t think to have a vintage birdcage at my wedding. It’s PERFECT!

Check out this kids’ table! Isn’t it the cutest, most fun thing you’ve ever seen!? I love the use of buckets as well as the lack of coloring books! What a creative, entertaining idea.

Now on to food. YUM! The cake matches her dress! Love it!

How sweet is this?! Ben and Chelcy sang to each other at their reception! *Note* Ben is a musician and wrote all of the arrangements for their ceremony! What a lucky girl Chelcy is!

Rose petals as you leave. Totally classy and environmentally friendly.

The Traditional Shoe = Dead.

You know what I love about today’s brides? They aren’t hell-bent on doing things the traditional way. More importantly, they aren’t sold on the idea that their shoes have to be white or ivory. As a matter of fact, most brides want their shoes to be spontaneous and fun. So, here are some of my favorites!

These are the shoes I wore. More traditional, yes, but I paid tribute to my bridesmaids with the color. Thank you to Stuart Weitzman for these beauties.

Christian Louboutin always makes my heart pitter patter a bit faster than normal. He is responsible for this pair of cute and classy heels. I love the ruffle detailing and spunky color.

I also really admire these crystal encrusted, satin, black pumps by Giuseppe Zanotti. I feel like these should be worn with a shorter dress at a nighttime cocktail style wedding. What do you think?

ooooooh Valentino…the things you do to me. I think these shoes speak for themselves. So romantic.

God bless you Kate Spade. God bless you for these wonderful slingbacks.

Lastly i found these ADORABLE flats by Rene Caovilla. Comfy and classy. My favorite!

Fall Weddings 2010

Here are some of my favorite trends on the fall 2010 wedding circuit. What are you guys into? Anything you’ll incorporate in your own wedding?

Sashes! Sashes! Sashes! I love that designers are giving every bride a WAIST this season.

Vera Wang Fall 2010

The little white dress! My favorite trend this spring and summer. So happy it’ll be around Fall 2010 too. Show those nice, tanned legs ladies!

Jenny Yoo Bridal Alternatives Fall 2010

Go Vintage this fall! Lace, antique roses, blues, peaches, tulle…chunky heels are a must!

Stephanie Allin – Bardot – Fall 2010

Too cold for bare shoulders? Wear delicate sheer sleeves, or a practical, elegant shrug. You’ll still look beautiful, graceful, and can “shrug it off” when it comes time to heat up the dance floor.

Alberta Ferretti Fall 2010 Collection

FEATHERS! It seems designers can’t get enough of the feather look this season. Most often the look is created with silk organza material. When done tastefully your gown will look elegant and soft. Make sure to not look too puffy though. Your fiance wants to marry you, not Big Bird.

Lazaro Bridal Collection 2010 – Style #: LZ3051

GMAT, Toronto, and the Food Problem

Hey guys,

Today I am sitting in the Vancouver Public Library chatting on AIM, reading, writing and just plain relaxing. I love libraries so much. My mother is to thank for instilling the libraries-are-fun outlook in my mind. She used to take my brother and I there on Tuesdays…or Wednesdays, I can’t remember….anyway, it’s always been a treat to sit in silence. There’s something about the smell of the old card catalogs and the complete concentration of everyone around me, (excluding that Asian kid across the way who has somehow managed to get comfortable on his book bag with his hoodie draped over his shoulders and head. He’s fallen asleep). There’s something about not having to say “No! Maisey No!” or having to make myself look useful at my in-laws place for the day. It’s ME time. Finally.

So why am I here? Well, Christopher is taking the GMAT today, one of the most important tests he’ll take most likely in his life…unless for some reason I become a hoe-bag and a paternal test is required. No, that wouldn’t happen…have you met Christopher? He’s the only one for me. Anyway, so he’s taking the GMAT which will decide which business school he gets into in 2011. His goal is high- Stanford or Harvard. He’s smart. He’ll get into at least one of those and if not, then for sure Columbia or Dartmouth. Christopher sort of sweats intelligence and success in a way that I never could. It’s one of the things I admire most about him. His smile is pretty radiant too. 🙂 The test will take around 3.5 hours and so I’m just hanging out enjoying myself, praying Christopher eases his nerves and focuses and aces it. If you’re reading and you’re the type that prays, say a little prayer for him too. He’ll appreciate it.

One of the things most on my mind is Toronto and going back on the 9th by myself with a puppy, a large suitcase, and 2 carry-ons. One of the most stressful parts is having to pay the cabby with credit card. Sounds silly but they have such animosity toward credit these days. One cabby YELLED at me and said “this is what is wrong with this city! Girls like you who think credit is the only form of payment!!” The last I checked, it’s 2010 and the world is becoming more and more paperless. Deal. With. It. He ended up accepting my credit card anyway, but the stress just gets to me. It’ll be fine in the end and I’ll be happy to be in my own bed at the end of the day, my routine back in place as it should be.

Which brings me to my next order of business. I can’t wait to have my workout routine back in place! I’ve gained 6 or 7 lbs! I know, I know, most people gain weight after getting married but I can’t stand it! My pants are fitting but the muffin top is looking horrendous. What’s worse is that even when I do workout I ruin everything with my food in take. Vacationing can be glamorous, sure, but don’t forget that the control you have over food is minimal and the social obligation to eating is extremely high. Hopefully I can get this food problem in order and get back down to my slim size 2…I’m closer to a 6 now. Some will tell me to stop whining, but those people usually aren’t 5’2″ with lots of hips, bum, and thighs. Even 3 lbs shows on me. Do any of you have any slim-quick solutions? What do you guys do to get back on track? Also, has anyone found the cure to arm flab yet? I’m looking like a bowl of rice pudding!!

Anyway, here’s a cute photo of Maisey Pie to conclude today’s post!
